Keynote Speakers

Ian Beausoleil-Morrison

Professor Ian Beausoleil-Morrison holds the Canada Research Chair in the Modelling and Simulation of Innovative Energy Systems for Residential Buildings at Carleton University.  His research is focused on the cogeneration of heat and electricity, alternative cooling approaches, and solar energy utilization.

Prior to moving to academia in 2007, Professor Beausoleil-Morrison worked for 16 years at CanmetENERGY, where he conducted research and developed building simulation tools to support industry and government programmes.  Recently he led Annex 42 of the International Energy Agency's Energy Conservation in Buildings and Community Systems Programme on micro-cogeneration systems and has served on numerous ASHRAE committees related to building performance simulation.

He was the founding president of IBPSA-Canada and chaired the first eSim conference in 2001.  Currently he is Vice-President of IBPSA-World, co-editor of the Journal of Building Performance Simulation, and a theme leader of NSERC’s Solar Buildings Research Network.  He has authored or co-authored more than 70 peer-reviewed papers on the topic of innovative building energy systems and building performance simulation and was the recipient of IBPSA's Outstanding Young Contributor Award in 2001.  He has been actively developing models within the ESP-r simulation program for 14 years and since 2006 has acted as the source code archivist for that simulation tool.

Thomas Auer

Trained as a Process Engineer at the Technical University in Stuttgart, Thomas is a partner and managing director of Transsolar GmbH, a German building energy design consultancy, with offices in Stuttgart, Munich and New York.

A specialist in the fields of integrated building systems and energy efficiency in buildings, Thomas has developed energy and building services concepts for projects around the world noted for their innovative design and low energy use. Among his projects in Germany are the Hochtief Prisma naturally-ventilated office building in Frankfurt, the new spa in Bad Aibling, and the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin.  The office tower for Manitoba Hydro in downtown Winnipeg, Canada - is considered one of the most energy efficient high rise buildings in North America.

Outside of Transsolar, Thomas is currently teaching at the Yale University School of Architecture, and he speaks frequently at conferences and symposia.
